The sky suddenly turned overcast. The dull grey was darkening sooner than expected. The adepts knew that the Sun would be eclipsed again. The devas were fed up with this frequent game of Rahu. The earth was heading towards severe drought, deteriorating, and life was perishing. This misconduct of Rahu threatened the existence of earth, upended the whole solar system. Devas complained to the Trinity about the contrived play of day and light that had become a game for Rahu. This must end else there will be no life and Brahma`s universe will finally fall apart. The Trinity agreed to end the chaos. Summoned Rahu growled, he was unwilling to cooperate. He politely replied to Lord Shiva saying that when the Moon had hinted Vishnu about his shapeshifting, Lord Vishnu did not hesitate and beheaded him. So he was not wrong in his doings. The devas had cheated asuras and the Vishnu dressed as Mohini was part of the game.
For Rahu this was not a game, this was revenge. Hence he would never stop engulfing Moon and Sun. The animosity was here to stay. Trinity tried their best to dissuade Rahu but he refused to back off. He told Lord Shiva,” I too, am dear to you. We all are Lord Brahma`s sons so why this partiality?” The argument went on for many celestial years until they finally reached an agreement. Rahu would not stop eclipsing Sun and Moon because he had to take his revenge and it was his inherent nature. This game of catch and go would be a never-ending cycle. Rather than eclipsing sun and Moon it every day he would do it occasionally.
Ever since than Rahu and Ketu keep eclipsing Sun and Moon on and off. The earth has to bear this torture. The eclipses have been feared in most civilizations. Norse culture blamed wolves for eating the Sun, Korean folklore believed mythical dogs are trying to steal the Sun. The ancient Greeks believed that a solar eclipse was a sign of angry gods. The eclipse hinted at the beginning of destruction and that it was the beginning of disasters and destruction. In The Inuit folklore, the Sun goddess Malina took away the Moon-god Anningan. A solar eclipse happened when Anningan managed to catch up with his sister at the time of the solar eclipse.
The modern-day science looks at it as a scientific phenomenon. It is a never-ending phenomenon that will keep happening as long as Sun and Moon live.
In astrology the sun represents the Atma, the soul and Moon represents the mind. When Rahu /Ketu form an axis with these luminaries in the chart, they capture the spirit and create obstacles. They play a game of light and shadow to create confusion. Whichever luminaires is conjunct with them is influenced by the two demons. The soul will have to struggle to find its way in this world or the mind will have to think through the shadows.
